Freakonomics
by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner
added to the SCCS Book Club on November 6, 2009

I am currently reading this book. It is a rather offbeat look at economics and the merger between economics and morality. Especially in today's climate this is an interesting and unusual take on economics. The authors do a great job of making economics more easily understood and they apply it to a lot of everyday circumstances that you might actually encounter rather than abstract theories that not too many of us understand. Freakonomics will definately make the reader think or re-think how the world might work.

A People's History of Sports in the United States
by Dave Zirin
added to the SCCS Book Club on November 9, 2009

The idea to read this book came from my desire to create a class offering at SMCC that would link the world of sports to the historical eras in which significant events occur. Many times high school students have a better rapport with sports history than political or economic history so being able to draw that parallel might help them make connections they have never thought of before.

Reading the book definately reinforced my belief that the world of athletics is in many ways a reflection of who we are as Americans and how we function as a capitalist Democratic nation. The book tackles issue such as race and gender relations with interesting insights into Major League Baseball and Jackie Robinson and Jesse Owens and the Olympics as well as using athletics as an arena for political dissent. I found the book to be very useful in preparing for the course Media in History that will be offered at SCCS. This book will used as supplemental reading in that course but I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in sports, history or both.
