BROWN ENVELOPE

Wednesday, January 13

SUPERINTENDENT'S LETTER

Dear Parents,

We began the New Year with a winter wonderland, rested students, and a sense of a new beginning. There was even a possibility of a “snow day”. We updated our Snow Day Plan in the fall and have added to it in the interest of student safety.

Snow Days:
• When school is cancelled all families will be called on the phone number you have provided us. The message will announce that there is no school for that day and any other pertinent information. If you’ve made any phone number changes since filling out the One Call form in September, please call Janet Runner at 419-627-9718 with your updated phone information.
• As superintendent I will also notify the local radio stations and area TV stations. This is another way of keeping you informed.
• New: We have set up our phone system now for two hour delays. When a two hour delay is called we can notify families of students who ride a bus. For the first time in decades, Perkins called a two hour delay. In speaking with the bus supervisor that morning, I asked her to pick up any students who may be standing outside and did not hear about the two hour delay. She supported my request. In the future, we (SCCS) will provide a One Call to notify bus riders that there is a two hour delay. Hopefully, that will eliminate students standing outside in the cold.

Although our faculty and staff may have had some time off to spend with their families over the holidays, they continued to be productive, following this year’s theme: By working together we will, Catch the Spirit, Feel the Change, and Live the Word of God.
Thank you to the following departments:

Facilities/Maintenance
•Besides catching up on the cleaning, our talented staff did the following at the W. Jefferson Street building: painted the first floor hallway, created the Admission’s Office where Mrs. McClung is housed, and completed the renovation of Room 12 next to the cafeteria. I so appreciate their dedication and commitment as they share their talents. They have truly made SCCS come alive and are role models for our students.

Advancement Office
The Advancement Office has planned an area Open House to be held at Sandusky Central Catholic School at the end of January. The goal is to provide families with an overview of what SCCS has to offer as an educational option. It is our way of spotlighting our Panther Family concept, strong academics, diversified athletic opportunities, and our great art/music program. For more information, call the school and ask for Cindy McClung, Chad Kresser, or Bryce Roth at extension 266.

Local Grants from Foundations
We are blessed to have local foundations offer us opportunities to receive monies for specific projects. Many of the monies they offer involve matching grant monies. This year we have utilized our faculty in writing grants for the following:
• Dorn Foundation: We would like to put a handicapped chair on the main floor near the Den to provide support for those who need additional assistance. With our handicapped accessible Den, this would complete our goal of allowing most people to view our programs and sporting events.
• Frost/Parker Foundation: We have requested assistance in putting lighting outside in our new parking lot on Decatur Street.
• Wightman-Wieber Foundation: We are in the process of writing a grant to support a distance learning center for educational purposes.
• The Mylander Grant: Each year, George Mylander supports our “Artist in Residency” program thanks to the initiative and vision of Karen Shaylor.
For further information on these grants, contact, Mary Ann Sloan in the Development Office AT 419-626-1892 – ext. 262.

Special Thanks:
• For the contributions from our alumni and families as we spearhead the Annual Fund campaign which offsets the costs of our operating expenses.
• To Michele Gallagher for sharing her many talents throughout our campus. She is responsible for our beautiful Christmas Tree which has adorned our main hallway.
• To parents and volunteers who have tutored in our Achievement Center. As a School of Excellence their time has provided support for students at all levels.
• To Chad Kresser and his students for making the website viable and informative. Recently we received a call from a school in Florida. The principal complimented SCCS on our website. They will be utilizing some of Chad’s ideas to upgrade their website in the near future. What a compliment!!!

We are a Panther Family where we share our talents, making school an exciting place for everyone. By working together, we continue to make good things happen---Thanks for all you do in the interest of students and the success of Sandusky Central Catholic School.

Wishing each of you a year where your New Year’s resolutions become a reality. Let us continue to pray for one another because through prayer anything is possible.

Sincerely,
Judy Monaghan, Ph.D.
Superintendent

SCCS Elementary School received a note of thanks from the Volunteers of America. Here is what
It said:

Dear Ann & students,
Thanks so much for the socks, paper products, and children’s clothes that you donated to the Crossroads Homeless Shelter. We hope you have a wonderful New Year and we are truly blessed to have you as friends.
We appreciate so much when the community helps with donating food, sheets, blankets, towels, and toiletries. We are housing and serving 82 residents here right now, with 10-18 being children. So thanks again for your donation to our shelter here at Crossroads,

Sincerely,
Sondra Anderson, Crossroads Director

We also received a note of thanks from Safe Harbour. It said:

Dear Students:

The Board of Trustees, Staff and Volunteers would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your generous donation of paper products. It is because of your generosity that Safe Harbour can offer the services to victims of domestic violence to provide for their safety, to help them heal and become independent survivors in our
community.

No goods or services were received in connection with this donation

Sincerely,
Ryan Arnott
Executive Assistant

A special thank you goes out to John May, who was so kind to deliver the paper products and the clothing to these shelters. His car was well packed.  The New Year is a good time to begin new habits with your children. Responsibility is the number one challenge for students, and teaching responsibility is the number one task of good parents. Thinking of ways to reinforce responsibility at home will only help develop responsibility at school. Be creative and enjoy finding out responsibility will help your child grow.

Words to share from Mother Teresa:
“Jesus wanted to pass on to us the opportunity to give of ourselves to him, so we could turn our love for him into living deeds. To accomplish that, he became the hungry one, the naked one, stripped of all earthly goods and comforts.”

Let us all reflect on what living deeds we can turn our love for him into.

In His Service,
Mrs. Ann Whitfield
K-6 SCCS Principal
